How it works

Every country decides which senders it accepts an SMS from. In most of them creating yours is enough; some ask you to register it first. This page covers how to tell which is your case, what we do to get your messages through while the registration is being filed, and how it is billed.

Where you need to register your sender

The panel tells you, country by country and for your own sender. Open it under Settings → Project → Channels → SMS and you'll see which are approved, which ask for registration and where each one stands. Use Request country to add a new one.

That's the place to check before a campaign into a new market. What each destination asks for — the paperwork, who files it and how long it takes — is in Countries.

What we do while the registration is filed

A registration can take days, and in some markets weeks. Rather than leaving your messages waiting all that time, we look for the best available route so they still arrive.

In practice the message goes out through whichever route is most likely to deliver it at that moment, even if it isn't the one your approved sender would use. That is what we call best-effort delivery: the aim is to maximise the chances of delivery while the registration moves forward.

How far it reaches depends on the country and its operators, so it's worth knowing what to expect:

• Availability varies. Not every destination has an alternative, and where there is one it doesn't always give the same result.
• The recipient may see a different sender. You keep seeing the sender you sent. What changes is what appears on the handset, usually a number instead of your brand.
• The operator has the last word. It can filter the message even when it left our side correctly.

Registration is still the way

These alternatives exist to support you while you file the registration, not to replace it. Where a country requires it, the requirement still stands.

Registering your sender is what lets us file it with the operator, and what makes your messages arrive under your brand consistently. That's why we always recommend registering the countries that ask for it, and doing it with time to spare: the full process is in Senders & registration.

Links have rules too

In some destinations operators restrict links inside an SMS: they may require the domain to be registered beforehand, filter the message carrying it, or strip the link out. This is separate from the sender restriction: you can have an approved sender and still have your links limited.

If your campaigns carry links and you send outside your usual market, check with us before a large send. Using your own branded domain helps, because a known, stable domain gets through filters more reliably than a generic shortener.

RCS works the other way round

Don't carry the above over to the other channel — the rule is the opposite:

• On SMS, while the registration is being filed we keep looking for the best route to deliver.
• On RCS, without an approved register nothing is sent to that country, no exceptions. Your contacts only receive something if you have SMS fallback enabled, and then they receive it as an SMS.

How it is billed

Send attempts are billed even when the message isn't delivered. The same applies when the operator filters it: the message was handed to them, and that is what counts.

It is the practical reason to register the countries that ask for it ahead of a large campaign: it cuts down the attempts that don't reach their destination.
